Switzerland’s Rhaetian Railway (RhB) has successfully operated the longest passenger train ever recorded, a remarkable assembly of 100 connected coaches stretching an impressive 1,910 meters. This groundbreaking achievement was organized to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Swiss railway system, a significant milestone for the nation’s transportation heritage. The train, comprising 25 separate multiple-unit trains linked together, embarked on a historic journey through the picturesque Swiss Alps, specifically traversing the eastern canton of Graubunden.

A total of 150 passengers had the unique opportunity to experience this record-breaking journey along the renowned Albula/Bernina route, a celebrated UNESCO World Heritage site. The train’s ambitious route covered approximately 25 kilometers, starting from Preda and concluding in Alvaneu, all completed in under 45 minutes. This feat of engineering and operational precision involved navigating through 22 distinct helical tunnels and crossing 48 bridges, showcasing the intricate and scenic landscape of the region. Among the notable structures crossed was the iconic Landwasser Viaduct, a testament to Swiss architectural and engineering prowess.

The operation of the world’s longest passenger train drew considerable attention, with thousands of spectators gathering along the route to witness the event firsthand. Many others observed the historic run on a giant screen set up to broadcast the journey, highlighting the public’s fascination with this remarkable display of railway capability. The successful execution of the record-setting train run underscores Switzerland’s long-standing reputation for punctuality, efficiency, and innovation in its railway operations, further cementing its status as a global leader in rail transport.
