A shield volcano named as Hayli Gubbi, located in the Ethiopian region, erupted on the Sunday evening after remaining inactive for more than 10,000 years, sending ash up to 14 km approx. (45,000 ft) high into the atmosphere.

According to the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC), the activity of explosion began around 8:30 am GMT on Sunday. Due to this eruption a large ash plume is moving towards Northern India even after hours of stopped eruption. Thick columns of ash originated from the Afar region, about 800 km northeast of Addis Ababa near the Eritrean border. Further, they were carried by high-levels of winds across the Red Sea region towards Yemen and Oman before making its way over the Arabian Sea into western and northern India.

According to the forecast reports, ash affected over northwest states including Gujarat, Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. The cloudy plume passed over these areas on Monday night, which reduced the visibility in several isolated regions as it is moving towards eastward. A thick layer of haze also surrounded over Delhi, where it reduced the air quality to ‘very poor’ category creating concerns over the ash clouds.

The IMD stated that a continuous monitoring of ash cloud’s movement is being done for planning flight’s movement. Which includes adjustments in routing and fuel requirements when needed. Flights over the affected region may face rerouting, longer travel times or holding patterns. Various airline operations across the country are facing disruptions after volcanic explosion as the ash is drifting towards western and northern regions as per the Directorate general of Civil aviation (DGCA) on Monday and issued a detailed advisory.

Multiple flights including IndiGo, Akasa Air, and KLM have already modified their schedule, while the other authorities are still monitoring the cloud’s movement.
