Vaisakhi Gala Dinner: The Sikhs of America organization hosted its annual Vaisakhi Gala Dinner here, bringing together an influential assembly of lawmakers, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders from the United States, Pakistan, and Britain. The prestigious event served as a platform to recognize outstanding contributions to public service, humanitarian work, and global Sikh representation.

Among the prominent honorees were Virginia Delegate JJ Singh, the first turbaned Sikh in a US state legislature; Pakistani Minister Ramesh Singh Arora; and British MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi. Organizers emphasized that the gala not only celebrates individual excellence but also serves as a vital bridge to inspire future generations by highlighting the profound overlap between core Sikh values and global democratic ideals.

Pioneering Leadership and Public Service in Vaisakhi Gala

A central highlight of the evening was the recognition of Virginia Delegate JJ Singh, who recently made history as the first turbaned Sikh to serve in a state legislature in the United States.

Addressing the gathering, Delegate Singh reflected on the foundational tenets of the Sikh faith that anchored his historic political campaign:

“Work hard, serve others, and believe in something bigger than yourself. Sikh values are American values. It’s about the overlap between the values of our faith and the values of our country.”

Beyond philosophy, Singh detailed his tangible legislative impact in Virginia, noting his sponsorship of crucial bills aimed at:

  • Enhancing protections for houses of worship.

  • Reducing the rising costs of higher education.

  • Implementing impactful measures to prevent gun violence.

International Diplomacy and Heritage Preservation

The gala took on a distinct international flavor with the honoring of Ramesh Singh Arora, the Minister for Human Rights and Minorities from Pakistan’s Punjab province. Arora was celebrated for his trailblazing efforts in promoting Sikh heritage preservation and facilitating smoother access for international pilgrims.

In his address, Minister Arora highlighted the success of the Kartarpur Corridor initiative and reiterated Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure and accessibility for Sikh pilgrims visiting historic gurdwaras.

From the United Kingdom, MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi was recognized for his steadfast advocacy for minority communities within the British Parliament, as well as his continuous work in promoting diversity, equity, and democratic values on the global stage.

Excellence in Business and Philanthropy

The evening also shone a spotlight on major figures in industry and humanitarian sectors:

  • Baldev Singh Kang: The prominent industrialist and entrepreneur was honored for his massive contributions to business, particularly within the trucking and steel sectors. Organizers commended his rapidly expanding global business footprint, which spans India, Armenia, Dubai, and the United States.

  • Sardar Bahadur Singh: Based in Oregon, this dedicated philanthropist received accolades for his extensive humanitarian and educational initiatives. His foundation has been instrumental in funding free medical treatments and providing education access to underprivileged families.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Jasdip Singh Jassi, the head of Sikhs of America, concluded the event by emphasizing the core mission behind the annual gala. He noted that the initiative was explicitly launched to bring Sikh achievements into mainstream global awareness.
