US Bangladesh Trade Deal 2026: As Bangladesh heads toward its general elections, the country has received a major economic boost from the United States. Just days before the polls, the two nations signed a significant trade agreement on February 9, aimed at easing trade barriers and strengthening bilateral ties.
Under the deal, the United States has agreed to cut the reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi goods from 20 percent to 19 percent, offering notable relief to Bangladeshi exporters. The move was confirmed in an official statement released by the White House.
The trade relationship between the two countries is substantial. In 2024, Bangladesh exported goods worth $8.4 billion to the US, while importing American products valued at $2.2 billion, according to data from the Bangladesh Bank and the National Board of Revenue.
Beyond tariff reductions, the agreement focuses on opening markets, encouraging investment, and deepening economic cooperation. As part of the deal, Bangladesh will extend special concessions to a wide range of US industrial and agricultural products. These include chemicals, medical equipment, machinery, vehicles and spare parts, ICT equipment, energy products, as well as agricultural goods such as soy, dairy, beef, poultry, nuts, and fruits.
The timing and scope of the agreement have drawn attention, making it one of the most closely watched trade moves ahead of Bangladesh’s national elections.
US Bangladesh Trade Deal 2026: US tariffs between India and Bangladesh is different
Even after this relief, Bangladesh continues to trail India when it comes to US tariff rates imposed on Asian nations. These tariffs were introduced last year by US President Donald Trump, who cited trade imbalances and alleged unfair trade practices as the justification. While the duties were initially set as high as 37 percent, they were later scaled down to 20 percent in August.
In comparison, India managed to secure a more favorable outcome. Under a recent India–US agreement, Washington agreed to slash tariffs on Indian goods from 50 percent to 18 percent, giving New Delhi a clear edge.
In an effort to close this gap, interim government chief Mohammad Yunus personally traveled to the United States and reportedly held behind-the-scenes meetings with Trump to push for further tariff reductions for Bangladesh. Despite these efforts, Bangladesh failed to achieve parity with India. As a result, Bangladesh’s tariff rate now stands on par with Pakistan, underscoring the limits of Dhaka’s negotiations with Washington.
Bangladesh Tariff News: All about the US Bangladesh agreement?
In the new trade deal, America has promised that it will impose 19 percent tariff on Bangladeshi goods instead of 20 percent, while there is talk of imposing zero percent tariff on some goods.
The US has also promised zero tariffs on some textile and apparel products from Bangladesh, although this will be limited by the amount of raw materials such as cotton and artificial fibres imported from the US.
Bangladesh is a leading textile producer in South Asia, though its growth will be limited by the amount of raw materials such as cotton and artificial fibres imported from the US.
The two countries also agreed to eliminate non-tariff barriers that hinder trade. Bangladesh will accept US vehicle safety standards, FDA certifications, and approvals for medicines and medical devices.
Bangladesh Tariff Reduce: Trade deal
Bangladesh has also pledged to promote the free transfer of data, digitize customs procedures, reform the insurance sector, protect labor rights, prohibit goods made with forced labor, protect the environment, and strictly enforce anti-corruption laws. The agreement also provides for strong protection of intellectual property rights and safeguards the interests of American cheese and meat producers. On a commercial level, Bangladesh will also plan to purchase approximately $3.5 billion in agricultural products, $15 billion in energy products, and aircraft from the United States over 15 years.
