This deal comes amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has escalated beyond Iran, with Iran launching retaliatory attacks using missiles and drones targeting US military bases, embassies, and US civilian energy infrastructure in neighbouring Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. This military conflict has led to a shortage in global energy supplies, primarily around the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil is transported.
