Russian General Vladimir Alekseev shot: Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Alekseyev was shot inside a residential building in Moscow. According to Russian authorities, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev was admitted to a hospital after being shot in Moscow on Friday.

Alekseyev serves as the Deputy Chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of Russia’s Defense Ministry. When Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin staged a rebellion in June 2023, Alekseyev was among the top officials sent to hold talks with him. According to the Moscow Prosecutor’s Office, an unknown assailant fired multiple rounds at Alekseyev inside a residential building in north-west Moscow, after which the attacker fled the scene.

Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) has earlier described Alekseyev as a central figure in coordinating missile and air strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine. He was also placed under European Union sanctions following allegations that Russia’s GRU military intelligence was responsible for the 2018 nerve-agent attack in Salisbury, United Kingdom.

In addition, the United States sanctioned Alekseyev in 2016, accusing him of orchestrating malicious cyber operations during the US presidential election that resulted in Donald Trump’s first term victory.

Alekseyev has served as the second-in-command of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces since 2011. In 2017, he was reportedly honored by the Kremlin with the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.
