PM Modi Malaysia Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has departed for his two-day visit to Malaysia, during which he will hold bilateral talks with Anwar Ibrahim. This is Prime Minister Modi’s third visit to Malaysia and the first since bilateral relations were elevated to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership in August 2024. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Malaysia, India is exploring opportunities for cooperation in the defence sector, including the sale of Dornier aircraft, maintenance of Scorpene submarines, and Su-30 aircraft.
Zakir Naik in Malaysia

The visit to Malaysia will include discussions on trade, investment, defence, and several other important issues, as well as the case of fugitive Zakir Naik. Naik has been living in Malaysia for 10 years, and several attempts have been made to bring him back to India. This issue has been raised on various occasions, and it is likely to come up again during PM Modi’s visit to Malaysia after eight years.

PM Modi Malaysia Visit

During his visit, PM Modi will also interact with the Indian diaspora and other business representatives residing in Malaysia. Malaysia is home to 2.9 million people of Indian origin, the third largest in the world, and the second largest Indian diaspora community. Malaysia is a key partner for India in ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific region and a crucial pillar of India’s Act East Policy. The Torana Gate in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, is a gift from India to Malaysia, symbolising the enduring friendship between the two countries.

During this visit, PM Modi stated that he is embarking on an official visit to Malaysia at the invitation of his friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and that the historical relations between India and Malaysia have seen continuous progress in recent years. Discussions will be held with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to further strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership. The goal is to deepen defence and security ties, enhance economic and innovation partnerships, and expand cooperation into new areas.
