The alliance between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, brokered by the United States to counter Iran, is showing signs of strain. This friction comes at a critical moment as tensions with Tehran escalate, according to an analyst.

Diplomatic Blunder and UAE Denial

The tension surfaced after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced a “historic breakthrough” meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during a supposed “secret visit” to Al Ain. However, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs quickly issued a denial, stating that relations with Israel are public and established under the Abraham Accords, not based on secrecy. The ministry declared any claims of undisclosed visits or arrangements as baseless unless officially issued by UAE authorities.

Analyst’s Perspective on Strained Relations

Middle East Institute analyst Natan Sachs described Netanyahu’s announcement as a “diplomatic blunder” that embarrassed the UAE. Sachs noted that this was an unusual move, especially since the UAE has been a close partner of Israel, even during recent conflicts. He suggested that Netanyahu might have been distracted by domestic politics or that the Emirati anger could stem from the leak itself, which would be seen as a breach of trust.

Abraham Accords and Shared Concerns Over Iran

The Abraham Accords, facilitated by the U.S. in 2020, normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations, including the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan. This normalization has led to expanded security cooperation, largely driven by shared concerns over Iran’s military ambitions. The alliance was notably tested when Iran launched strikes against UAE infrastructure, with Israel reportedly deploying air defense systems and personnel to the UAE. The UAE confirmed intercepting drones originating from the west.

Vulnerability and Strategic Partnership

Sachs highlighted the UAE’s vulnerability to Iran’s short-range missiles, which are more numerous and cheaper than those fired at Israel. Despite facing significant Iranian fire, the UAE has maintained an open partnership with Israel. However, the public disclosure of Netanyahu’s visit may have been perceived as a step too far, potentially undermining the trust essential to the Emirati leadership and the broader regional alliance.
