Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump held a phone call on Sunday to discuss the potential resumption of war with Iran. The conversation, lasting over 30 minutes, also covered Trump’s recent visit to China and ongoing developments regarding Iran.
According to an Israeli source cited by Yedioth Ahronoth, the possibility of a direct strike on Iran remains uncertain, but Israel could be drawn into hostilities if they recommence. This discussion follows heightened regional tensions and a fragile ceasefire that has been in place since April 8, brokered by Pakistan.
Following the call, President Trump issued a strong warning to Iran via his Truth Social platform, stating, “For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!”
Drone Attack on UAE Nuclear Facility
The high-level discussion occurred on the same day that a drone strike targeted the perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the United Arab Emirates. The attack, which took place on May 17, 2026, resulted in a fire at an electrical generator.
The UAE’s Defence Ministry reported that air defenses intercepted two drones, while a third struck a generator launched from the “western border.” While no injuries were reported and radiation levels remained normal, the incident has raised significant concerns.
International Concern and Condemnation
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed “grave concern” over military activities that threaten nuclear facilities. Qatar condemned the attack, labeling it a “flagrant violation of international law” and a “serious threat to regional security and stability.”
The UAE has been a target of repeated Iranian missile and drone attacks since February 28, contributing to the precarious regional security landscape. The fragile ceasefire, which failed to yield a lasting agreement after talks in Islamabad, has added to the instability.
