One of the most notable moments of the ceremony was the appearance of Kim Jong Un’s wife, Ri Sol Ju, who had not been seen at any official event or public function for several months. Her return quickly drew international attention. State television footage showed Ri Sol Ju attending the stadium event, appearing relaxed and at ease.
During the ceremony, Kim Jong Un delivered a brief address in which he referred to North Korean soldiers supporting Russia in the war in Ukraine, highlighting their role and contributions. He did not address other international issues, with state media reporting that his remarks focused largely on national unity and the safeguarding of national interests. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for a major and potentially historic gathering of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, described as the party’s ninth congress. Although no official date has been announced, the meeting is widely expected to shape key decisions on the country’s future policies, leadership, and strategic direction.
Overall, the New Year’s ceremony served as more than a celebratory occasion, functioning as a platform to project unity and strength. Kim Jong Un’s appearance with his family, his reference to the soldiers, and the buildup to the party congress suggest that North Korea is positioning itself to firmly pursue its policies and leadership agenda in the period ahead.
