Japan Earthquake Today: On Tuesday, the western Chugoku region of Japan was hit by an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that the earthquake was followed by a series of sizeable aftershocks. However, tsunami warning had not been issued so far. As per the reports, the epicenter of the earthquake was the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture.

The epicenter of the first earthquake, which hit at 10:18 a.m., was in Shimane Prefecture, the agency said, adding that there was no danger of a tsunami. The US Geological Survey recorded a slightly lower 5.8 magnitude reading. The earthquake registered an upper five on Japan’s Shindo intensity scale in the western city of Yasugi, a strength at which heavy furniture can topple and drivers may find it difficult to steer.

The same region, i.e., the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture was hit soon afterwards by smaller quakes with magnitudes of 4.5, 5.1, 3.8 and 5.4, with no tsunami alerts issued. There were no reports of any major damage.
Chugoku Electric Power operates the Shimane Nuclear Power Station, about 32km away from the first earthquake’s epicentre. Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority said there were no irregularities at the plant.
A spokesperson said the utility was checking on any impact on the plant’s No 2 unit, which has been operating since December 2024 after being shut down following the March 2011 disasters in Fukushima.

West Japan Railway said it had suspended Shinkansen bullet train operations between Shin-Osaka and Hakata following the quake.
