Israel has issued threats to resume its military campaign in Gaza, with the stated objective of compelling Palestinian factions to disarm. This ultimatum comes amidst claims that Hamas is refusing to surrender its weapons and an alleged failure of the International Stabilization Force to achieve disarmament.
The current ‘truce’ with Gaza is reportedly becoming increasingly fragile, with ongoing Israeli actions leading to casualties and undermining the cessation of hostilities. The situation highlights a persistent tension and the risk of renewed escalation in the densely populated Palestinian territory.
Israel’s ‘Permanent War’ Strategy
Former Israeli negotiator Daniel Levy has shed light on what he describes as Israel’s broader strategy of ‘permanent war.’ Levy, who serves as the president of the US/Middle East Project, suggests that this approach is aimed at establishing a dominant position for Israel across the Middle East. The strategy reportedly seeks to create a regional order where neighboring countries are either economically and politically dependent on Israel or are militarily weakened to the point where they cannot challenge Israeli interests.
Levy posits that Israel is actively working to undermine any potential deal between the United States and Iran. According to his analysis, Israel advocates for continuous military operations against Iran and maintains a posture of persistent attacks on both Lebanese and Palestinian targets, even when formal ceasefires are in place.
US Policy and Palestinian Rejection
The influence of Israeli narratives on United States foreign policy is also a significant point raised by Levy. He asserts that US policy decisions are heavily shaped by Israeli perspectives, to the extent that the two appear almost indistinguishable in certain contexts. This perceived alignment impacts the dynamics of regional diplomacy and conflict resolution efforts.
Meanwhile, Palestinian factions have publicly rejected US-backed plans for disarmament. They have linked any consideration of surrendering weapons to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and a definitive end to the Israeli occupation. These factions accuse Israel of strategically using humanitarian aid as a tool of leverage in the ongoing conflict, further complicating efforts towards a lasting peace.
