Protests erupted on Sunday in Tehran’s major bazaars after the rial fell to record lows, driving up prices and living costs. By Tuesday, the unrest had spread to students and residents in several cities, including Shiraz, Isfahan, Kermanshah, and Fasa. Videos captured protesters chanting slogans such as “Death to the Dictator” and “Death to Khamenei” while clashing with security forces. According to the NY Post, additional footage from MEK shows crowds across Iran voicing chants like “Death to Khamenei!” and “Shame on you, shame on you!” as demonstrations—particularly led by Tehran’s bazaar merchants—continue to gain momentum nationwide.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has attempted to ease tensions, recognizing protesters’ “legitimate demands” and urging the government to take measures to improve the economic situation. “From an Islamic perspective … if we do not address the issue of people’s livelihoods, we will end up in hell,” Pezeshkian said during an event broadcast on state television.

Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani announced on Thursday that authorities would engage in direct dialogue with representatives of trade unions and merchants, though she did not provide further details. At the same time, officials have vowed to adopt a “firm” approach and cautioned against attempts to exploit the unrest to create chaos.

“Any effort to turn economic protests into a means of insecurity, destruction of public property, or implementation of externally designed scenarios will inevitably face a legal, proportionate, and decisive response,” Iran’s prosecutor general stated on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Tasnim news agency reported Wednesday evening that seven individuals linked to “groups hostile to the Islamic Republic based in the United States and Europe” had been arrested.

Iran is currently observing an extended weekend, with authorities declaring Wednesday a bank holiday at short notice, citing energy conservation amid cold weather.
