Indian Student Shot Dead in Canada: According to the Toronto police, Shivan Avasthi was shot dead on Thursday near Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston road. When officers reached at the spot, they found him critically injured due to gunshot and he was declared as dead on the spot. Authorities claimed that suspects escaped the area before police arrived. As a precaution, lock down is being placed at the university campus, while a search operation was carried out. This incident marked Toronto’s 41st homicide of the year.

On Thursday, the Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed anguish over killing of 20-year-old Avasthi, an Indian doctoral student. “We express deep anguish over the tragic death of a young Indian doctoral student, Mr Shivank Avasthi, in a fatal shooting incident near the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus,” the Consulate said in a statement posted on X. Consulate is in contact with grieving family and is providing all necessary support in coordination with local authorities.

This situation has created fear and outrage among students attending the University of Toronto Scarborough. According to the Reddit post, a student named Shivank Avasthi, who’s a third-year life sciences student, was shot in broad day-light in the campus valley. Which is a location frequently used by students, as well as advertised by University of Toronto.
The post mentioned issues of campus security which are being raised for a long period of time by students. The article criticised absence of clarity on the identities of suspects and their reason for committing the crime, given that most of the students feel insecure to go back to school, given their evening classes and exams.
Police hunt Toronto resident in connection with killing of Indian-origin Woman

This incident comes just a few short days after another violent incident involving an Indian national in Toronto. The body of a 30-year-old Indian-origin woman, Himanshi Khurana, was found earlier this week. The police authorities are currently looking for Toronto resident Abdul Ghafoori in connection with her murder.”
According to a report by CBC News, it is also believed by authorities to be linked to involve violence between people who were in a close personal relationship. According to a message by the Indian Consulate in Toronto on social networking site X, it is providing help to the family of the Indian-origin victim, Khurana.
