Hardev Virdee Lead London Police: The Metropolitan Police has appointed British Indian finance expert Hardev Veerdee as its new Chief Strategy and Investment Officer to help navigate a period of severe financial pressure and driving organizational reform. Virdee, the current Group Chief Financial Officer at Barts Health NHS Trust, brings over 30 years of public sector finance experience to the UK’s largest police force. Crucially, he will lead long-term commercial planning and strategic resource prioritization to protect frontline policing while working to close a significant financial deficit.
Chosen through a rigorous selection process involving both senior leaders and junior staff, Virdee is set to transition later this year, coinciding with his upcoming presidency at the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.
Navigating Financial Pressures and Structural Reform
The appointment arrives at a critical juncture for the Metropolitan Police, which faces rising operational demands alongside a widening budget deficit. As Chief Strategy and Investment Officer, Virdee will take charge of the force’s long-term commercial blueprints and investment programs. He will also act as a primary senior ambassador to government ministers, key funding bodies, and external partners to ensure resources are directly funneled into frontline policing.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley heavily praised Virdee’s credentials and highlighted the inclusive nature of the hiring process:
“He was hugely impressive in the selection process, and that was not just the opinion of the panel I chaired, but also one of more junior colleagues—something we now routinely do in senior appointments,” Rowley stated. “This is a hugely challenging role and he will bring deep experience in strategic leadership, financial stewardship and organisational transformation.”
Hardev Virdee: A Proven Track Record of Financial Turnarounds
Virdee’s career is defined by his extensive history within the National Health Service (NHS). Since joining Barts Health NHS Trust in November 2019 as Group CFO and Deputy Group Chief Executive, he successfully guided the trust out of financial special measures. Under his financial stewardship, the trust steadily reduced its structural deficit, culminating in a balanced budget for the 2025/2026 financial year.
His wider healthcare portfolio includes prominent senior executive roles at:
-
Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust
-
Wandsworth Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)
In recognition of his focus on staff training and creating employment opportunities for unemployed youth, Virdee was named the NHS Director of Finance of the Year in 2023 while serving as Chair of the NHS National Finance Academy.
Transition to the Met and Broader Leadership Roles
Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Virdee reiterated his dedication to the public sector:
“Having worked in the NHS for many years, I am excited to continue my commitment to public service. This is a challenging role, and I look forward to working closely with colleagues and partners to deliver the Met’s vision and bolster investments and resource to support the Met’s frontline policing.”
Outside of his primary corporate duties, Virdee is a highly active figure in the global accounting community. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and is scheduled to officially step into the international body’s Presidency this summer. No formal date has been finalized for his official first day at Scotland Yard, allowing him to smoothly transition out of his NHS responsibilities and into his upcoming presidential duties.
