Authorities in South Africa successfully airlifted a massive crocodile from the Komati River following a high-risk operation to recover the remains of a missing local resident. The reptile is suspected of having attacked and consumed a 59-year-old businessman from Gauteng, who disappeared last month.
Crocodile Euthanized and Recovered
The businessman, identified by local media as Gabriel Batista, owner of the Border Country Inn, went missing after his vehicle became stranded while attempting to cross a flooded river crossing near crocodile-infested waters. His Ford Ranger was swept away by the current. After a week-long search, a specialized task force located a large crocodile in the vicinity that they believed was responsible.
Officials had been monitoring the reptile for several days, observing signs of recent feeding, including prolonged periods of inactivity. SAPS Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter noted that the crocodile remained close to where the businessman was last seen and did not move away when a helicopter flew overhead. Potgieter explained that crocodiles that have recently consumed a large meal typically become less active and require sun exposure for digestion.
Helicopter Operation and Discovery of Remains
With the necessary permissions, the animal was euthanized under challenging and dangerous conditions. Captain Potgieter was lowered from a helicopter into the crocodile-infested waters to secure the reptile. It was then hoisted out of the water by the helicopter and airlifted away.
Subsequent examination of the crocodile revealed human remains within its digestive system. Additionally, six pairs of sandals were discovered inside the animal’s stomach. The recovered remains have been submitted for DNA testing to confirm the identity of the victim. It remains unclear if the shoes are connected to any other missing persons in the area.
The dramatic operation, involving the airlift of the enormous crocodile, was captured on camera and has circulated widely on social media, highlighting the extreme measures taken by authorities in their investigation.
