Recently, President Talon’s political party chose former Finance Minister as their candidate for upcoming president’s elections. Meanwhile, opposition candidate Renauld Agbodjo was disqualified by the electoral commission due to insufficient sponsorship. Coup in Benin: Military Committee Declares Control as Government Collapses

Amid these shifts between political parties, a group of soldiers in Benin reportedly carried out a coup, declaring the dissolution of the government on state-run television. This group, is calling itself the Military Committee for re-foundation, and announced the removal of President Patrice Talon and shutdown of all state institutions.
Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri has been appointed as the President of the military committee, before the coup was announced, gunfire began and could be heard near the presidential residence, both state television and public radio went dark.
