Tarique Rahman, who has journeyed from imprisonment at the age of 4 to his return to the position of Prime Minister after 17 years, will be sworn in as Prime Minister of Bangladesh today alongside elected MPs, as Dhaka politics enters a new era following the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024. Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister, the late Khaleda Zia, led the BNP to a landslide victory in the general elections after returning from 17 years of exile.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent India at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected government of Bangladesh. The Speaker’s participation in this important event underscores the deep and unwavering friendship between the people of India and Bangladesh and reaffirms India’s strong commitment to the democratic values that bind the two countries. It is believed that Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar may also attend.
Tariq Rahman Oath Ceremony

Elected BNP MP Rashiduzzaman Millat stated that the swearing-in ceremony for members of Parliament will take place at 9:30 a.m. at the Parliament House. Another session for ministerial swearing-in will be held at 4:00 p.m. Prime Minister Modi and the Prime Minister of Pakistan will not be present. The Prothom Alo reported that question remains as to whether a Constitutional Reform Council will be immediately formed to implement the proposals in the July National Charter.

In the elections held on February 12, BNP secured a landslide majority in the 300-seat parliament, winning over 151 seats and installing Tarique Rahman as its prime ministerial candidate. Jamaat-e-Islami, a former BNP ally, contested the election as the opposition and emerged as the second-largest party, establishing itself as a major opposition force. According to the Bangladesh Election Commission, BNP-led alliance won 212 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami-led bloc won 77. Hasina’s Bangladesh Awami League was barred from participating in the election.
