Asim Munir CDF: With the aim of centralizing military command in Pakistan, the role of the Chief of Defence Forces was defined under the 27th Amendment of the Constitution last month. In this sequence, the post of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) was abolished and the post of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) was created. Now the former ISI chief and Army Chief Asim Munir has been appointed as the CDF. Now he has become the commander of all three forces (Army, Air Force, Navy). Along with this, Munir has also got the responsibility of Chief of Army Staff (COAS). CDF is a powerful military post in Pakistan. This appointment has been made for five years.

The Pakistan President’s Office announced on the social media platform X that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s recommendation for Munir for both the positions of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) has been approved. Surprisingly, this amendment increases Munir’s powers, while the Supreme Court’s powers have been reduced. Asim Munir will now be able to exercise these powers even after his term ends. He will neither retire nor will the position be taken away from him.

President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as CDF as well as COAS for a period of 5 years,” the Pakistani President’s X account read.

Munir, who holds the position of CDF, now has responsibility for all three armed forces. Furthermore, he will also command nuclear weapons. The National Command Authority previously oversaw and controlled nuclear weapons and missile systems. It was chaired by the Prime Minister of Pakistan. For this reason, Munir is considered the most powerful military officer in the country. Furthermore, the Pakistani President has decided to extend the service of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu by two years. This will be implemented from March 19, 2026.

Pakistan’s leading politician Asif Ali Zardari congratulated both officers of the Pakistan Armed Forces. Asim Munir is the first military officer in Pakistan’s history to hold the five-star rank of Field Marshal and to command the COAS and CDF simultaneously. He is the second military officer in the country’s history to hold the Field Marshal title after General Ayub Khan, who led Pakistan during the 1965 war with India.
