IAF's Shubhanshu Shukla to Pilot Upcoming AX-4 Mission

Shukla to Become Second Indian in Space Since 1984 on AX-4 Mission

Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla is an officer of the Indian Air Force (IAF). Who was selected as the 'lead' astronaut for the Gaganyaan mission of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) some time ago. He has now been selected as the pilot for the scheduled Axiom Mission 4.

Will work as a pilot

Serving IAF officer Shubhanshu Shukla will serve as the pilot for the AX-4 mission. The Ax-4 mission will be commanded by former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, director of Axiom Space's human spaceflight. The two mission specialists are ESA project astronauts Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. The AX-4 mission will make a "comeback" to human spaceflight for India, Poland and Hungary.  Shubhanshu Shukla will be the second Indian astronaut to go to space since 1984. His journey began when he was commissioned into the IAF Fighter Wing in June 2006. As an experienced test pilot, he has great flying experience of 30 hours on various aircraft, including the Su-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, and An-2,000.

Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla in Gaganyaan mission  

On February 27, 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla as one of the top astronauts to receive in-depth training for India's first human spaceflight mission. The Gaganyaan mission  is scheduled to be launched in 2025. In August 2024, Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla was selected as the astronaut for the upcoming India-US mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair was chosen as a 'backup' astronaut. India's space sector experienced significant growth and achievements in the last one year.
