Russian drone strike leaves 3 dead, multiple structures damaged
A Russian drone attack near Kiev has resulted in the deaths of at least three people, causing damage to a residential apartment building, eight homes, commercial structures, and several cars. Three individuals, including two men and one woman, lost their lives in the wreckage caused by a drone during an overnight assault in the central Kyiv region.
Following statements by Russian officials that the country's air defense systems had intercepted and destroyed 121 drones launched by Ukraine overnight, an attack on Kyiv ensued. The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Telegram that drones were downed in 13 regions of Russia, with seven of these incidents occurring in Moscow and its vicinity.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that drones were intercepted at multiple locations around the Russian capital. According to Al Jazeera, citing Russian news agencies, two of Moscow's airports, Vnukovo and Domodedovo, resumed handling flights after a temporary suspension of operations. The Russian Defense Ministry announced that the assaults also focused on Kursk, Bryansk, Belgorod, and the Crimean peninsula under Russian control.
As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, both nations are attempting to leverage potential discussions during the initial period of U.S. President Donald Trump's tenure. Before his second return to the White House, Trump promised to resolve the Moscow-Kyiv conflict immediately after assuming office, sparking hopes that he would compel Ukraine to make concessions to Russia.
On January 22, Trump increased pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a deal, warning of stricter economic sanctions if Moscow does not agree to halt the conflict in Ukraine.
