Trump ends US ties with WHO over COVID-19 response

US withdraws from WHO as Trump criticizes COVID-19 and financial demands

In a significant move, US President Donald Trump ended the United States' association with the World Health Organization (WHO) and signed an executive order to exit the organization.

This withdrawal is a result of the organization's poor management of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global health issues, as stated in the order. President Donald Trump has been a long-time critic of the WHO.

President Donald Trump emphasized that the United States exited the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020 due to the organization's insufficient handling of the COVID-19 pandemic that began in Wuhan, China, as well as other global health crises, and its failure to carry out necessary reforms.

There was a failure to show independence from the excessive political influence of WHO member nations.

President Donald Trump stated that the WHO is asking for payments from the US that are significantly higher than those from other countries. He criticized these financial demands, highlighting that the payments expected from the US are much greater compared to other nations.

However, the WHO is requesting an excessively large payment from the US, which significantly surpasses the contribution levels of other nations. Speaking to the media in the Oval Office following his swearing-in ceremony, Trump stated that the US has paid USD 500 million to the WHO, whereas China, with its 1.4 billion population, has only contributed USD 39 million. He mentioned that this disparity was unfair and influenced the decision.
