Gaza Ceasefire Vote Delayed by Israeli Cabinet Until January 18
Israel and Hamas have come to an agreement regarding the war in Gaza that extended for over 15 months. However, Israel's cabinet has delayed a significant vote on the Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal until January 18.
The Security Cabinet was scheduled to vote today, January 17. An Israeli official mentioned that the entire cabinet will likely vote on the ceasefire agreement this Saturday.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid responded to the coalition party's threat to quit the government if the deal is approved, he said, "I assure Benjamin Netanyahu not to worry or be discouraged; you will receive all the support required to complete the mortgage agreement. This is more important than any disagreement we've ever had."
Simultaneously, Israel's Minister of National Security, Itmar Ben-Gvir, harshly condemned the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. He claimed that the agreement would compromise the war's accomplishments and emphasized that if it is sanctioned, his party will be expelled from the Otzma Yehudit administration.
A spokesperson for Gaza's Civil Defense reported that 86 individuals have been killed and 258 wounded in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire agreement was declared on Wednesday. The daily fatality count in the time right after the ceasefire announcement is the highest in over a week.
