Meta CEO Slammed for Misinformation on 2024 Indian Election
New Delhi: Social media giant Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg is set to receive a summons from a parliamentary panel for his comments on the 2024 Indian general election. Mark Zuckerberg had said that after Kovid 19, the governments of many countries including India fell in the elections held in 2024. Ashwini Vaishnaw has lashed out at his false claim. BJP MP and Chairman of the House Committee on Communications and Information Technology Nishikant Dubey said Meta will be summoned for spreading misinformation.
In a podcast on January 10, the 40-year-old Facebook co-founder had said that the Covid pandemic has eroded trust in incumbent governments around the world. He wrongly cited the example of India in this regard. He said that 2024 was a very big election year across the world and elections were held in all these countries, including India. The incumbent governments lost basically every single election. At the global level, there was a big reason, whether it was inflation or economic crisis. The impact was also enormous because of the way governments fought Covid. People's faith in democratic institutions has also declined, he claimed.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw's Response
In response to Zuckerberg's statement, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw wrote on social media, "As the world's largest democracy, India participated in the 2024 elections with over 640 million voters. The people of India reaffirmed their faith in the PM-led NDA. Mr. Zuckerberg's claim that most of the incumbent governments, including India, lost the 2024 elections post-Covid is factually incorrect.
