Pakistan PM Calls for Accountability After Violent PTI Protests
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday vehemently denounced the assault on Rangers and police officers by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf demonstrators in Islamabad, as reported by ARY News. In a statement, Sharif demanded swift identification and accountability of those involved in the incident.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of offering the best medical treatment to the Rangers and police officers injured in the attack and declared that attacks on law enforcement personnel under the guise of peaceful protest were entirely intolerable.
He emphasized that maintaining law and order in the city is the duty of the police and rangers.
Sharif labeled the group accountable for the attack as anarchists, indicating that their actions were driven by a desire for violence rather than genuine protest, and called it extremism, ARY News reported.
He asserted that Pakistan cannot tolerate any form of chaos or violence and condemned the bloodshed as being driven by malicious political intentions.
Earlier, during the Tehreek-e-Insaf protests demanding Imran Khan's release from Adiala jail, a vehicle hit and killed four Pakistan Rangers on the Srinagar highway.
Moreover, five people, including police officers, were injured in the incident.
According to ARY News, which cited security sources, 25 policemen have died and more than 100 others have been injured since the violent protests began on November 24.
Following the incident, the Pakistan Army was deployed in Islamabad under Article 245 of the Constitution, with shoot-at-sight orders reportedly issued, according to ARY News.
Meanwhile, the Tehreek-e-Insaf rally, led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, entered Islamabad today, marking the start of a critical 'do or die' protest to demand the release of PTI founder and Prime Minister Imran Khan from jail, ARY News reported.
The rally, which includes convoys from Hazara Division, DI Khan, and Balochistan, joined Gandapur's convoy at the Hakla interchange.
Imran Khan's wife Bushra Bibi and other senior PTI leaders are also participating in the protest.
