On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados described the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "historic moment" for the CARICOM nations, expressing their honor in hosting the summit between India and the group of Caribbean island countries.
"I think we are all happy that we can have this opportunity to meet with PM Narendra Modi. It is a historic moment for most of us in CARICOM to be able to meet with and have the CARICOM-India at the level of Heads of Government...," the Barbados PM said.
Upon his arrival in Guyana today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was warmly greeted by Guyana's President Irfaan Ali, along with Grenada's Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, Barbados' Prime Minister Mia Mottley, and four ministers from Guyana at a hotel in Georgetown.
The visit, at the level of heads of government, underscores the strong relationship between the countries.
During his visit, PM Modi will address a special sitting of Guyana's parliament. He will also join leaders from the Caribbean partner countries for the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit.
In a press briefing ahead of the PM's visit to Guyana, the Ministry of External Affairs noted that the Prime Minister's visit comes at the invitation of Guyanese President Mohammad Irfaan Ali.
The Prime Minister of Barbados, speaking to ANI, noted that the last time the leaders met was during the UN General Assembly. She emphasized that their interactions reflect the strong bond between the two regions.
India and Barbados maintain a close and cordial relationship, engaging actively in various international forums such as the UN, the Commonwealth, and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). A statement from India's Ministry of External Affairs highlighted Barbados' support for India's candidature across several multilateral platforms, including elections for different UN bodies.
Around 3,000 people of Indian origin have settled in Barbados, many of whom have since acquired local nationality. Notably, Prime Minister Modi's visit marks the first time in 56 years that an Indian Prime Minister has traveled to the Caribbean nation.
