Prime Minister Modi has a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.
The two nations committed to tackling the issue of Indian economic offenders residing in the UK. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of India in the UK's efforts to address this matter.
The statement also mentioned that both leaders concurred on the necessity to advance discussions on migration and mobility issues.
This is the first meeting of the two Prime Ministers.
This was the inaugural meeting between the two Prime Ministers. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Starmer on his new role. Starmer extended his best wishes to Prime Minister Modi on securing a historic third term, according to the statement.
Both Prime Ministers expressed satisfaction with the progress in bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-UK comprehensive strategic partnership, focusing on economy, trade, emerging technologies, research and innovation, green finance, and people-to-people connections.
They also discussed issues of mutual interest, including those of international and regional significance, the statement added.
Emphasis on Free Trade Agreement
The two leaders emphasized the urgency of restarting Free Trade Agreement negotiations as soon as possible and expressed confidence in the negotiating teams' ability to settle the remaining issues to mutual satisfaction, resulting in a balanced, mutually beneficial, and forward-looking Free Trade Agreement.
Noting the ample opportunities for further engagement between the two sides given the growing bilateral economic and business ties, and to better serve the consular needs of the Indian community in the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Modi announced the opening of two new Indian Consulates General in Belfast and Manchester in the United Kingdom.
Starmer welcomed the announcement.
"The two leaders directed their Ministers and senior officials to work towards expeditious implementation of the various consensus that form part of the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership," the statement said. They also hoped for more frequent dialogue and discussion.
