Elections in the USA were on 5th November 2024. America is known to be one of the ancient countries to have democracy in the world. These elections decided the president for the next 4 years. The main candidates in the elections are Kamala Harris, who is of Indian origin, and Donald Trump, who was elected from 2016-2020. Harris is vice president of the USA in the elected government of the Joe Biden as the president.

Presidential Elections in the USA
According to Article two of the United States Constitution, it quotes that the person who serves as president, the individual should be a US born citizen, should be at least 35 years and have been residing in for at least 14 years. In the 22nd amendment of the constitution, individuals can’t be resident for more than two terms (i.e. 8 years). Even to fill the nomination from the specific party’s national convention, individual needs to have the votes from their own party in the primary elections. An individual party’s convention selects a vice presidential running mate to formulate the party’s ticket.
The USA has a two-party system of democracy. The two parties are- the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. The USA has a different system than in India. The USA has a total of 50 states and each state has its own independent election commission. Presidential elections are held in a much decentralized manner in the federal structure of this country.
Although America has its own election commission one just like India, it just takes care of the finances in the presidential elections. Every state conducts elections according to their own rules and regulations. These states already have a pre-determined number of electors to elect the president. Each state selects these electors on the basis of party preference and, in the end, in all the states, the candidate of the party which gets more electors is declared the winner.
There are a total of fifty states in America, but electors are carried separately from the capital, Washington DC, also. Presidential election results are also announced on this basis. Every state has been given time till 15 December, 2024, so that the cumulative results are announced because some states announce the result faster than others.
Impact on India
America is the world power, because of that the policy it will adopt will impact the worldwide. After 1990, when India opened its doors to the world by adopting globalization. America started influencing India. Before 1990, America used to be keen towards the other subcontinents of South Asia. As it was evident in the years of 1965 and 1971, it supported Pakistan in the war against India.
In 1971, while during the war with Bangladesh-India, it supported Bangladesh by placing the 7th ATM fighter plane in the Bay of Bengal. At that time, the USSR supported India by giving it aerial Support to show America that if anything happened to India would strike back. After 1990, India’s economy grew more than ever; America kept keen eyes on India and started supporting it on safety grounds. America agreed and gave permission to India for nuclear.
On the other hand, China started showing up as like another world power. With this, America started calling India friends as both, countries have democracy. The truth is, America needs India more on technological grounds than India needs America, as we have man power which the US doesn’t. India comes between the US and China. Thus, Man Mohan Singh’s government, it is being ensured that America doesn’t cross the limits.
Donald Trump-Republican Party
Donald Trump is an American politician, media personality and business executive, who has served the state as the 45th president in 2017-2021. Trump has a degree in B.Sc. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. His father made him the president of the family of real estate in 1970. Trump renamed the business as the Trump Organization and readapted the company toward building and renovating skyscrapers, hotels, casinos, and golf courses. After a lineage of business failures in the late 1990s, he launched side ventures, mostly licensing the Trump name. From 2004 to 2015, he became co-producer and hosted the reality television series, The Apprentice. He and his businesses have been suitor or respondent in more than 4,000 legal actions, including six business bankruptcies. In 2016, he won the presidential elections in the USA. If he wins the elections this time as well, he will be elected twice as the president.
Kamala Harris-Democratic Party
Kamala Harris is the major candidate from the Democratic Party for the presidential elections. She is the vice president of the US in Joe Biden’s government. She is an attorney and the 49th vice president of the US. She is the first woman to have such a high rank in the US Government. She is also the first African-American and Asian-American vice president the US government ever witnessed. She represented California in the US senate in 2017-2021 and is attorney general of California. In 2016, she won the senate election and became the first South Asian-American senator.
