US-Iran Nuclear Talks: Tensions have long been high between the United States and Iran. One point of contention is Iran’s nuclear program. A major discussion on this very issue is scheduled to take place today, Friday, in Muscat, the capital of Oman. While the talks are focused on Iran’s nuclear program, deep disagreements remain between the two sides regarding the agenda. The US is pushing to include Iran’s missile program, regional proxy groups, and human rights issues, while Iran wants to limit the negotiations solely to the nuclear issue and the lifting of sanctions.

US-Iran Nuclear Talks: Why was Oman chosen as meeting location?

On X (formerly Twitter), Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the talks will be held in Muscat on Friday morning at 10:00 AM. He thanked his Omani counterparts for making the arrangements. The US team will include President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Oman is acting as a mediator between the two countries, as Iran requested a last-minute change of venue from Istanbul to Oman and insisted on a bilateral format. The meeting was initially scheduled to take place in Istanbul.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump is demanding “zero nuclear capability” and that he has “several other options.” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that any agreement must include missiles, proxy groups (such as Hamas and Hezbollah), and domestic repression. This means the US does not want to limit the meeting solely to the nuclear program. US President Donald Trump is prioritising diplomacy, but has also warned of military action if negotiations fail.

US and Israel have strong objections to Iran’s nuclear program. While Iran claims its nuclear program is entirely peaceful, the US and Israel remain skeptical. Tensions between them have increased in recent days.

It’s worth noting that while meetings are underway between the two countries, both sides have also aimed weapons at each other.

  • This is a time of pressure, and whoever exerts more pressure will gain the upper hand. Recent developments indicate:-
  • US fighter jets destroyed an Iranian drone in the Arabian Sea that had approached a ship aggressively.
  • US has deployed the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to the region near Iran.
  • Thousands of extra troops, aircraft carriers, and surveillance aircraft have been sent to the area around Iran.
  • Iran has also deployed the Khorramshahr-4 ballistic missile.
  • These talks are taking place amidst escalating tensions over the past few months, with the US pressuring Iran over its missile program and regional influence. Reports of the talks being cancelled emerged a few days ago, but several Middle Eastern leaders (including those from the Gulf states) pressured the White House, after which the talks resumed.

Gulf countries are worried about Iranian retaliatory attacks

Tweets from US officials suggest that the US is uncertain whether the talks will be successful. Given the escalating tensions between the two countries, Turkey’s Erdogan and the German Chancellor have appealed for a de-escalation of the conflict, while the Gulf Arab states are worried about Iranian retaliatory attacks in the event of a US strike. These talks are globally significant, as their failure could increase the risk of a direct military confrontation in the Middle East. However, no concrete results have emerged yet, and both sides remain entrenched in their positions.
