A French student, identified as Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, 18, has been formally charged in Singapore with committing acts of mischief and public nuisance. The charges stem from a video that gained widespread attention on social media, depicting the teenager licking a straw from an orange juice vending machine before returning it to the dispenser. The incident reportedly occurred on March 12 at a shopping mall in Singapore.
The viral video quickly sparked public outrage and led to a formal complaint being filed by iJooz, the operator of the vending machine. In response to the incident, iJooz took immediate steps to address the hygiene concerns. The company thoroughly sanitized the affected dispenser and replaced all 500 straws that were part of the machine’s stock. Furthermore, iJooz has announced plans to implement enhanced safety and hygiene protocols across its network of vending machines.
Enhanced Hygiene Measures Planned
Looking ahead, iJooz intends to introduce significant upgrades to its vending machines to prevent similar incidents and ensure customer safety. Among the planned improvements are the provision of individually packed straws, offering a more hygienic alternative to bulk dispensers. Additionally, the company is considering modifications to the straw compartments, potentially implementing a system that only dispenses a straw after a successful payment transaction. These measures aim to bolster confidence in the safety and cleanliness of their services.
Legal Ramifications in Singapore
Singapore is recognized globally for its stringent laws regarding public conduct and hygiene standards. Under the nation’s legal framework, the offense of mischief carries a potential penalty of up to two years in prison, a fine, or a combination of both. Similarly, charges of public nuisance can lead to a jail sentence of up to three months, a fine, or both. The teenager, who is reportedly studying at a French business school located in Singapore, has not yet entered a plea regarding the charges. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 29, where the case will proceed.
