Former President Barack Obama has voiced skepticism regarding claims that the federal government possesses hidden information about aliens, asserting that the government is inherently poor at maintaining secrets.
Dismissing Conspiracy Theories
Speaking with host Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show,” Obama directly addressed ongoing UFO speculation, labeling it as “conspiracy theories.” He elaborated on his view by stating, “One of the things you learn as president is the government is terrible at keeping secrets.”
Obama suggested that if definitive proof of alien life forms existed and was being concealed, the information would have inevitably surfaced by now. He humorously remarked, “I promise you, some guy guarding the installation would have taken a selfie with one of the aliens and sent it to his girlfriend.”
Past Comments and Clarifications
This discussion follows a notable moment in February 2026 when the former president made somewhat cryptic remarks on Brian Tyler Cohen’s podcast. At the time, Obama stated, “They’re real, but I haven’t seen them,” which subsequently fueled widespread online speculation.
He later clarified these comments on Instagram, explaining, “Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there. But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we’ve been visited by aliens is low, and I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us. Really!”
Skepticism Towards Cover-Ups
Despite his doubts about a deliberate cover-up, Obama has not entirely dismissed the possibility of extraterrestrial life. During his conversation with Colbert, he expressed a wish that aliens were real and even joked about his potential role as humanity’s representative.
“First contact, I think I would be a good emissary for the planet,” Obama stated. “I’ve got some experience at statecraft and diplomacy. I’m friendly. So I actually think I could do a pretty good job.”
Presidential Perspectives on UFOs
In April, President Donald Trump had indicated at a rally in Phoenix that initial releases from a Pentagon UFO study were forthcoming, stating they would be published “very soon.” He mentioned discussions with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth regarding the release, noting the discovery of “many, very interesting documents.”
Following Obama’s earlier comments on aliens, Trump posted on Truth Social, “Based on the tremendous interest shown, I will be directing the Secretary of War, and other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters.”
