The art world is reeling following the murder-for-hire trial of Daniel Sikkema, who is accused of orchestrating the killing of his estranged husband, Brent Sikkema. Brent Sikkema, a highly respected New York City gallerist, was discovered brutally stabbed 18 times in his Rio de Janeiro townhouse on January 14, 2024. The alleged assassin, Alejandro Triana Prevez, was apprehended shortly after and reportedly confessed, implicating Daniel Sikkema in the alleged plot. Prosecutors contend the motive was rooted in a bitter divorce and significant financial disputes between the couple.

Allegations and Incriminating Evidence

Central to the prosecution’s case are voice notes and WhatsApp messages attributed to Daniel Sikkema. These communications reportedly reveal Daniel’s alleged frustration with Brent, his expressed wishes for Brent’s death, and discussions about financial gains from inheriting as a widower. One message from May 2023 purportedly shows Daniel demanding a $6 million transfer and alimony. A voice note from December 2023 allegedly contains Daniel stating, “Let’s see if … instead of getting divorced, I end up a widower, which would suit me much better.”

Contentious Relationship and Divorce Proceedings

The relationship between Daniel and Brent Sikkema, which spanned approximately 19 years and included a son born via surrogate, reportedly soured significantly. Daniel allegedly proposed an open marriage and a move to Cuba, proposals that Brent rejected. The divorce proceedings, initiated in 2022, were reportedly fraught with accusations, including Daniel’s alleged attempts to forge checks, flee with their son, and make unfounded allegations against Brent, such as a false claim of mass murder at JFK airport, which led to Brent’s temporary arrest and subsequent release without charges.

Defense Arguments and Gallery’s Legacy

Prosecutors allege that Daniel Sikkema paid over $10,000 to hire Prevez, utilizing intermediaries for the transaction. However, the defense team maintains Daniel’s innocence, asserting a lack of direct evidence linking him to the murder plot. Defense lawyer Florian Miedel suggested Prevez acted on his own accord, potentially driven by personal motives, including an obsession with a woman in Cuba and a desire to purchase a house for her. Miedel argued that Daniel’s alleged incriminating comments were merely outbursts of anger during a tumultuous divorce and did not reflect a genuine intent to commit murder.

Brent Sikkema was the visionary founder of Wooster Gardens, later renamed Sikkema Jenkins & Co., a gallery celebrated for its commitment to showcasing a diverse roster of contemporary artists.
