Eric Church’s Memorable Commencement Address at UNC Chapel Hill
American singer-songwriter Eric Church delivered a powerful and viral commencement address to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s graduating Class of 2026. Addressing the graduates in Kenan Memorial Stadium, the North Carolina native and Appalachian State alumnus shared a message that resonated deeply, earning a standing ovation. Church’s commitment to giving back extends beyond his music, with his Chief Cares foundation actively involved in philanthropic efforts, including providing housing relief to those affected by Hurricane Helene.
Six Strings, Six Pillars of Life
The core of Church’s viral speech revolved around the six strings of his guitar, each serving as a metaphor for fundamental pillars of life. After a brief technical difficulty with the microphone, Church launched into his profound message. He explained that just as a guitar produces harmony when all its strings are in tune, and falters when even one is off, so too do the essential elements of life work in conjunction.
Faith, Family, and Finding Your Spouse
The ‘Low E’ string, described as the thickest and most foundational, represented Faith. Church emphasized the importance of nurturing one’s faith not only during challenging times but also in moments of peace and contentment. He then moved to the ‘A’ string, symbolizing Family, highlighting its role in providing richness and unwavering support, ensuring no one ever feels truly alone. Graduates were encouraged to connect with their families, show up when it matters, and allow their loved ones to support them through life’s difficulties.
Ambition, Resilience, and Community
Representing Ambition and Resilience, the ‘G’ string was presented as a value that can easily be neglected. Church urged the graduates to pursue their aspirations with determination and to possess the fortitude to rise again after facing setbacks. The ‘B’ string stood for Community, addressing the modern temptation to perform for a broad audience while belonging to none. He implored the graduates to actively seek out and build genuine communities, to put down roots, and to practice generosity.
Embracing Your Unique Self
Finally, the ‘High E’ string, the thinnest and highest note, symbolized the individual, ‘You.’ Church cautioned against the pressures of external expectations and the pitfalls of social media comparisons, asserting that each person is unique and possesses a distinct contribution to offer the world. His powerful closing statement, “The world does not need another cover song, it needs an original,” encapsulated this message.
The commencement ceremony concluded with a performance of Church’s hit song “Carolina,” celebrating the achievements of the graduating class. Provost Magnus Egerstedt honored Eric Church by presenting him with an honorary degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.
