Ripun Bora Resigns From Congress: Ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections in Assam, the Congress party has been dealt a significant political setback. Senior leader and former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora has resigned from the party, stepping down from all organizational posts as well as relinquishing his primary membership.

Bora had earlier resigned as the state Congress chief in 2021 after the party suffered a decisive defeat in the Assam Assembly elections. His latest move comes at a crucial time, as the party prepares to strengthen its position ahead of the next electoral battle in the state.

Over the years, Bora has held several key positions in both state and national politics. He served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha, representing Assam in the Upper House of Parliament. In state politics, he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the first time in 2001 and went on to serve as a minister during two consecutive terms of the government led by former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

His resignation is being viewed as a major development in Assam’s political landscape, potentially impacting the Congress party’s strategy and morale ahead of the elections. Political observers believe the move could trigger further realignments within the party ranks in the state.

Ripun Bora served as the state president of the Assam Congress for nearly five years. He assumed leadership of the party in 2016. That same year, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha, a term that ends in 2022. He left the Congress in 2022 and joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) . However, he returned to the Congress in 2024. Even after his return, he remained largely undiscussed.

In this context, his resignation is significant and is believed to be detrimental to the Congress party. Election campaigning in the state is expected to pick up pace in the next few days, while Himanta Biswa Sarma remains quite active. Recently, a video of his has gained widespread attention.

Following Ripun’s resignation, there is talk that he may join the BJP. Meanwhile, accusations and counter-accusations are ongoing between Himanta Biswa Sarma and Gaurav Gogoi. Chief Minister Himanta was initially accused of owning 1,000 bighas of land, while Himanta Sarma accused Gogoi of having links to Pakistan. In response, Gogoi said that CM Himanta seems to have lost his mental balance. Several senior Congress leaders also attacked Himanta, asking why no action has been taken if the allegations are true. The Assam Police have not yet filed a case.

Following the resignation of Ripun Bora, political circles are abuzz with speculation that he could soon join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Although no official confirmation has been made, the possibility has intensified political discussions in Assam.

At the same time, a heated war of words has erupted between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi. The controversy began with allegations that the Chief Minister owns 1,000 bighas of land. In response, Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Gaurav Gogoi of having links with Pakistan, further escalating tensions between the two sides.

Reacting sharply to the allegations, Gaurav Gogoi remarked that the Chief Minister appears to have “lost his mental balance.” Several senior Congress leaders have also stepped into the fray, questioning why no formal action has been initiated if the accusations are indeed credible. They pointed out that the Assam Police have not registered any case so far, raising concerns over the handling of the matter.

The ongoing exchange of accusations and counter-allegations has intensified the political climate in Assam ahead of the elections, with both parties continuing to attack each other publicly.
