KL Rahul: The Indian senior batter KL Rahul finally broke his silence on the discussions regarding his Test average, which has been under the radar in recent years. He has played a total of 63 tests for India and still was batting at an average of 40-35.41, which many stated doesn’t justify the talent he has. No doubt he is one of the best test batters of India, but his numbers in home conditions have not been up to the mark to date. In recent years, many changes have been done to his batting position, but now he has returned back to the opening slot, the position from where his Test career began.

His return as opener in the Indian test team has helped him enter a new phase in his career, taking the role of India’s senior player after the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

The recently concluded Anderson Tendulkar Trophy is considered one of the best of his career, as he smashed 532 runs in 10 innings at an average of 53.20, which includes two centuries and two fifties, with the highest score of 137. The same momentum was carried by him in the ongoing Test series against the West Indies, as it was seen that he came up with a century in the first innings at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

The 33-year-old has opened up on his criticism over his test number and averages, stating that he gives importance to enjoying his game and executing plans over focusing on numbers and averages. He stated that when his approach is right, the numbers and averages will come naturally.

He said,

“I don’t let it bother me, but it’s not that I don’t see it. Obviously I see it, and ideally any batter would want their numbers to be as high as they can be. But right now it’s more important for me to make sure my game plans are tight and that I am enjoying my cricket. Those are the boxes I want to tick more than thinking about numbers. There is enough sample size also for me to see that when I do these things well, automatically I start getting more runs, and the numbers will go higher as well.”

Further, he shared about his mindset on handling pressure, stating that he focuses on the things that he can control and takes things step by step, leaving the rest to fate and destiny.

He said,

“So it’s important to take it step by step and not go to step 3 first and forget two steps. But there are obviously expectations and pressure of numbers. And there is so much being spoken about it, as cricket is a numbers game at the end of the day. But I try and focus on the simpler things that I can control as much as I can and then leave the rest up to God.”
