Guerdy Abraira, a prominent figure on The Real Housewives of Miami, has revealed that her recent battle with breast cancer has instilled in her a profound sense of strength and confidence. What began as preparations for a routine breast augmentation surgery in March 2023 took an unexpected turn when doctors recommended a mammogram due to the density of her breast tissue. This led to the diagnosis of stage 1B estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer in her left breast.

Facing the Diagnosis

Abraira described the initial period following her diagnosis as one filled with disbelief and helplessness. “You feel such a helplessness,” she shared. “There’s a disbelief that you cannot get over for the first few months, you know? And then… you have to face the reality of it and then figure it out.” This realization marked the beginning of her journey to confront the disease.

Treatment and Recovery

In June 2026, Abraira underwent surgery to remove the cancerous tumor. Following the procedure, she opted for the Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score test. This test helped her and her medical team assess the likelihood of the cancer returning and determine the necessity of chemotherapy. The results indicated that a 12-week course of chemotherapy, along with radiation therapy, was the appropriate treatment plan. “I’m thankful that I was able to actually utilize this test and be able to see the mathematics of it all,” Abraira stated, appreciating the scientific guidance provided by the genomic testing assays.

Support and Shifting Perspective

The path to recovery was challenging, with difficult days testing Abraira’s resolve. She recalled her first day of chemotherapy, admitting, “I said, ‘I am not doing this.’” However, the unwavering support from her family, particularly her husband Russell, motivated her to persevere. “And Russell looked at me, he goes, ‘Oh, yes, you are baby girl; you’re going to do this for me, and you’re going to do this for those boys right outside that door.’ And that broke me to reset.” Embracing a moment-by-moment approach, Abraira visualized progress, stating, “And that’s how visually I was able to say focus, focus, focus, look, the light is getting brighter.”

Embracing a New Self

Abraira now finds herself in a phase where she prioritizes her well-being, a significant shift from her previous go-getter mentality as a party planning extraordinaire. “And then came cancer knocking on the door and says, ‘Sweetheart, have a seat and stay humble. It’s time…to test you,’” she reflected. “I definitely feel that it gave me this different type of strength and confidence.” She now embraces a new version of herself, one that values health above all else. Her eating habits and alcohol consumption have changed, focusing on being the best version of herself. She is also comfortable sharing past photos, even those without hair, marking a significant step in her acceptance and self-love journey.

Advocating for Breast Health

Leveraging her platform, Abraira has partnered with Abbott to share her experience with the Oncotype DX test, aiming to raise awareness and encourage other women to prioritize their breast health. “It’s coming from [my heart] because I lived it, I experienced it, so I want to help,” she said. She emphasizes the importance of listening to one’s body and utilizing available scientific tools for early detection and effective treatment. Abraira urges women to get tested, perform self-exams, and seek medical attention if they notice any changes, reminding them, “If you don’t take care of you first, then what’s the point of this life?”
