Round Rock ISD has issued a crucial reminder to all students and their families concerning the care and responsibility of district-issued Chromebooks throughout the summer break. Students are expected to retain their devices for the upcoming academic year. For those participating in summer learning programs, daily attendance with their Chromebooks is mandatory.

The district has outlined essential care tips to ensure the longevity and functionality of these devices. It is advised to always keep the protective case on the Chromebook. For battery maintenance, especially during long-term storage, students should aim to maintain a charge of approximately 80% and ensure the device is shut down. Storing the Chromebook in a cool, dry place is also recommended to prevent damage from extreme temperatures or humidity.

Proper Handling and Maintenance

When carrying the Chromebook, it is best practice to use two hands to ensure a secure grip and prevent accidental drops. Cleaning the device should be done with a soft microfiber cloth; harsh chemicals or abrasive materials should be strictly avoided as they can damage the screen and casing. Families are reminded that they will be held responsible for any damages incurred to the district-issued equipment.

What to Avoid for Device Safety

To prevent potential issues, students and families should be mindful of several key precautions. Exposure to extreme heat, such as leaving the device in a hot car or direct sunlight, can cause significant damage. It is also important to keep food and drinks away from the Chromebook to avoid spills and sticky residue. Never lift the device by its screen, as this can strain the hinges and display. Avoid placing heavy items on the keyboard, which could damage the keys or internal components. Furthermore, removing the asset tags from the device is prohibited, and students must never share their passwords to maintain device security.

Leveraging GoGuardian Parent App

Round Rock ISD encourages the use of the GoGuardian Parent mobile application. This tool provides parents and guardians with valuable oversight of their child’s online activity on school-managed devices. The app can send email alerts for safety concerns that may arise during non-school hours, offering an additional layer of protection and awareness for students.

Support and Returns

The RRISD Technology Center will observe a closure from June 19 to July 6. However, contact information for technology support outside of summer learning sessions will be made available. Students who will not be returning to Round Rock ISD for the next academic year are required to return their Chromebooks and chargers to their respective campuses or directly to the Technology Center.

Additional resources, including login information for students and other educational materials, are accessible through the district’s online platforms. These resources are designed to support students in their continued learning and engagement with technology.
