Apple to compensate Siri users ₹8,500 for privacy breach
Apple has agreed to pay up to ₹8,500 (around $92) to eligible users as part of a privacy breach settlement involving Siri. The class-action lawsuit, filed in 2020, accused Siri of recording private conversations without consent. Users affected between 2014 and 2024 can claim compensation by visiting the settlement portal and providing the required details.
Apple has resolved the privacy lawsuit related to its voice assistant service in the United States, with eligible users receiving payments of up to ₹8,500 (approximately $92). The resolution is linked to a class-action lawsuit initiated in 2020, which claimed that Siri captured private conversations of users without consent. Apple has consented to settle for approximately 790 crores ($95 million) in this matter. Qualified users may receive up to Rs 8,500 ($100) as compensation.
Who will get the money?
Individuals who utilized Siri on an Apple device from September 17, 2014, to December 31, 2024, and experienced unintended Siri activation leading to the recording of private conversations may be eligible for compensation. This applies to users of iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch, HomePod, iPod Touch, and Apple TV. The lawsuit was filed in 2019, claiming that Siri occasionally turned on without prompts and captured users' confidential talks. Some of these recordings contained health details and private chats, which were reportedly shared with external contractors.
