QR code to replace SMS for Gmail login verification

Google is focusing on enhancing security in response to the rising cybercrime nationwide. The company plans to introduce QR code verification in Gmail to boost privacy. Currently, 2-factor authentication is conducted via SMS, but this method will soon be phased out in favor of QR code-based two-factor authentication.

Advantages of QR Code Two-Factor Authentication

Gmail will enhance security by implementing QR code two-factor authentication. Users will need to scan the QR code with their smartphone's camera to access Gmail, ensuring a more secure login process. Gmail spokesman Ross Reichanderfer mentioned that the adoption of QR code two-factor authentication aims to curb the growing misuse linked to SMS.

Introduction of SMS-based Two-Factor Authentication

SMS-based two-factor authentication was launched in 2011, but with the rise in cybercrime, it is no longer considered secure. Previously, a 6-digit OTP was sent to log into Gmail. Now, QR code two-factor authentication will be used for enhanced security.
