Cyber Fraud Alert: Wedding Invitation Scam on WhatsApp
Wedding Card Scam: In the age of social media, wedding invitations are now being sent via WhatsApp. Cyber fraudsters are exploiting this trend to drain bank accounts through these wedding cards.
In such cases, it's important to be cautious. Thieves may send wedding invitations via WhatsApp or other messaging platforms, which contain a link or PDF file. Opening these files can lead to hacking.
Malware can be concealed within a PDF or link, designed to steal your banking information. Alarmingly, this can occur without the need for an OTP.
Malware install: Software is installed on your mobile by opening a link or file.
Background activity: This software tracks banking apps and details in the background.
Transactions without permission: This malware can do transactions without permission.
The Telecom Department has issued a warning to exercise caution against such scams. They advise against downloading any unknown links or PDFs and recommend staying alert if a suspicious file is encountered.
What To Do If You Are Scammed?
If you are a victim of such fraud, promptly report it by calling the helpline number 1930. Additionally, notify your bank and the cyber cell.
Precautions:
-Avoid Clicking on Unknown Links or Files: This helps protect against phishing attacks, malware, and scams. Always verify the source before interacting with any suspicious content.
-Secure Your Banking App with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring more than just your password—often something you have (like a phone) or something you are (like a fingerprint).
-Use Antivirus Software on Your Smartphone: Having a reputable antivirus app can help detect and prevent malicious software from compromising your device. Regular scans and updates are also important for staying protected.
