New Google Feature Uses Temporary Emails to Hide Real Addresses
The issue of spam messages and emails continues to grow, but Google is actively working on solutions. Recently, the company was discovered developing a feature called "Shielded Email," which allows users to hide their real email addresses by using temporary email aliases.
A recent report from Android Authority revealed that Shielded Email first appeared during an APK teardown of Google Play Services 24.45.33. Based on the code strings, the publication speculated that the feature provides temporary or one-time-use email aliases that automatically forward incoming messages to your main account.
The New feature- "Shielded Email"
The publication also mentioned that the new shielded email option appeared in the 'Autofill with Google' menu under Google in the Android Settings app. However, tapping on it led to a blank page, suggesting that the feature is still under development. The concept of using a temporary email to protect your personal information from being exposed online is promising, but it's unclear how Google will implement this functionality. While third-party services like TempMail already offer similar temporary email addresses for signing up on unfamiliar websites, Google's shielded email feature could be particularly valuable, as the company's autofill service works across nearly all apps and devices on Android.
It's another interesting thing to see if these temporary emails will end with the alias @gmail.com or Google will use randomly generated email addresses, which is what most current services that provide temporary emails do. If Google's new shielded email feature uses emails ending with @gmail.com, it will be much harder for companies to track your data because it won't be easy to identify whether an email address is real or temporary.
