Samsung is Developing Tri-Fold Smartphone

Samsung is being speculated that it is developing a tri-fold smartphone. It is being said that this step has been taken to match Huawei, which launched the world's most tri-fold smartphone named Mate XT Ultimate Design in September. Before its launch in 2025, Samsung has recently been granted a patent for a flexible display device with three screens and a special barrier layer for better durability and less stress.

Samsung Grants Patent for Tri-Fold Smart Phone

A patent granted to Samsung Electronics by the US Patent and Trademark Office (through MSPoweruser) describes a display device with a flexible form factor. It was filed by Samsung in 2021 and approved on November 5. Unlike the rigid device, which has an allocated screen area for displaying images, this purported device shows three areas: the first area that is folded, the second area that can be folded and opened, and the third area that is arranged in a specific direction. According to the patent, the device will have a special barrier layer below the display panel. This layer will have at least one opening that can overlap the other display area, and there will be two lower plates below the panel that will overlap all three areas. Moreover, the display panel can also have an anti-reflective layer at the top, which is similar to the one used on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Flexible Display Device can Grow into Any Shape

Although it suggests that flexible display devices may have the ability to fold, fold, or be distorted into various shapes, the document may reference the same alleged tri-fold smartphone that is rumored to be developed by Samsung. The tri-fold smartphone is also expected to have support for several input methods in addition to touch gestures. This suggests that the alleged device might also have S-Pen support. However, it is important to note that the devices that have been granted patents do not all reach the final production stage or do not contain the same elements. Thus, it is unclear whether Samsung's alleged tri-fold smartphone will have the same technical aspects as described in the patent filing.
