Apple Faces Technical Hurdles with iPhone 17 Air's Thin Design
Learn about Apple's slimmest devices
Measuring just 5.1mm in thickness, the latest iPad Pro M4 stands as the company's slimmest product to date. The iPhone 17 Air from Apple, which was rumored to debut late next year, was expected to establish a new standard for slim devices. However, according to the Naver Blog, Apple has encountered technical challenges with components, suggesting that the forthcoming iPhone 17 Air may not be as thin as originally anticipated.
Apple has created a new battery technology
The report indicates that Apple has created a new battery technology with a thinner substrate. This innovation was expected to significantly reduce the thickness of the iPhone 17 Air by several millimeters. However, due to technical difficulties and cost concerns, Apple is reportedly reverting to its previous battery technology, preventing the device from being as thin as desired. Nonetheless, the iPhone 17 Air will still be slightly thinner than Apple's slimmest smartphone to date—the iPhone 6, which was released in 2014 and is notorious for the Bendgate issue. This new phone is also said to be considerably thinner than the iPhone 16 series, which measures around 6 mm in thickness.
What is the release date for the iPhone 17 Air?
The iPhone 17 Air is projected to debut by late 2025, marking the first non-pro iPhone with a 120Hz display. It is rumored to be powered by the next-generation A19 chip and include features such as action buttons, camera controls, and Apple Intelligence. Concurrently, Samsung is working on a competitor to the iPhone 17 Air called the Galaxy S25 Slim, which is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2025 and be Samsung's slimmest flagship smartphone.
