The Ministry of Railways has approved the final location survey for the proposed 30 km Gurdaspur–Mukerian rail link. Describing it as a major development for the region, Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries, S. Ravneet Singh Bittu, emphasized the strategic importance of this new railway line.

The link will serve as an additional route to Amritsar, enhancing regional connectivity. Ravneet further said that Gurdaspur is a city in the Majha region of the state of Punjab, between the Ravi and Beas river. It is a district HQ which shares border with Pakistan.

Gurdaspur is a loading station of foodgrains and fertilizer also dealt at the station with Average 5 rakes/ month is being handled at the station. Further, there are two GCTs i.e. Chinna and Kathunangal are operating in the vicinity of the Gurdaspur station.

The goods traffic of the region is coming from and going towards Ambala end via Amritsar and Jalandhar (Approx. 140 Kms) or via Pathankot and Jalandhar (Approximate 142 KMs), besides, reversal is also taking place if rakes are going via Amritsar station.

After construction of this line the traffic to/from Ambala can be handled via Mukerian (Approximate 92 KMs), means approx. 50 KMs will be save on every rakes, plus reversal at ASR can also be saved on the rakes going via ASR.

Bittu further said that being a border district there is also a cantonment area at Tibar (Tibri Cantt.), therefore, military traffic will also be run on this proposed line. There is a possibility of local traffic from the Dhariwal as it is a producer of woolen clothes.
