2008 Jaipur Serial Blasts: Four sentenced to life by Rajasthan High Court
The Rajasthan High Court on Friday sentenced four accused to life imprisonment in the 2008 Jaipur serial blasts case. After the serial bomb blasts on May 13, 2008, a live bomb was found near the Ramachandra temple. The court has convicted the accused under unlawful activities and terror conspiracy.
Jaipur: On Tuesday, the Rajasthan High Court sentenced four terrorists to life imprisonment for their involvement in the 2008 Jaipur serial blasts. The case is related to a live bomb discovered near the Ramchandra temple in Jaipur's Chandpole area, which was found following the serial explosions on May 13, 2008.
The high court found Shahbaz Hussain, Mohammad Sarvar, Azmi, Mohammad Saif, and Mohammed Safiur Haman guilty under sections 13 (unlawful activities) and 18 (terror conspiracy) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
On April 4, four days ago, the special court handling the serial blasts case found these four individuals guilty. After hearing arguments regarding the sentence on Tuesday, the High Court handed down a life imprisonment sentence. During the sentencing arguments, Public Prosecutor and Special Public Prosecutor (PP) Sagar stated, 'The accused have committed a grave offense with the aim of instilling fear in society.' He emphasized that there should be no leniency towards them.
On May 13, 2008, following eight bomb blasts in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, terrorists had planned a ninth explosion. This bomb was discovered intact in Chandpole market. Had it detonated, it could have resulted in numerous casualties, but it was successfully defused 15 minutes before the scheduled explosion.
The lawyer argued in favor of the accused, stating that they had already served a 15-year jail sentence and had been acquitted in 8 cases. However, the court dismissed these arguments and imposed a severe punishment on the accused.
