168-Year-Old Mosque demolished in Meerut amid tensions
Meerut: A 168-year-old historic mosque in Meerut was demolished by the administration with a bulldozer in the middle of the night. The mosque was located on a service lane on Delhi Road and was coming between the metro and rapid rail corridors. The electricity connection of this mosque was cut two days ago. After this, the Muslim side itself tried to remove the mosque and broke some parts by using hammers. After this, late on Friday night, the administration demolished the entire mosque by using bulldozers and the debris was also removed immediately. After this, there was space for metro work.
The mosque was located near Jagdish Mandap on Delhi Road and had been there for a long time. The administration says that it was decided to remove it due to hindrance in construction work. Locals claimed that they wanted a mosque at a new site and adequate compensation, but it was removed without their demands being met. Tight security arrangements were made at the spot. The mosque was demolished by bulldozers amid heavy police deployment. The atmosphere in the area became tense after the news of the demolition of the mosque, but the police and administration are keeping an eye on the situation.
In this case, the administration clarified that this action has been taken on the basis of consent and there is no other reason behind it. On the other hand, the Muslim side has reiterated the demand from the administration to provide space for the new mosque and provide compensation.
