J&K launches first-ever Geo-tagging project for Poplars
The Jammu and Kashmir government has initiated geo-tagging to safeguard the heritage Chinar trees in the region. Dr. Syed Tariq, a scientist at the Forest Research Institute, stated that Chinars are significant oxygen producers. Poplars also have their own importance and play a crucial role. Considering this, we decided to monitor the Poplar stocks in the valley.
With technological advancements, we have given these trees a 'digital foundation.' Each poplar now has its own 'Aadhaar' number, connecting it to Digital India. We have implemented QR codes for scanning. Each district has a unique code corresponding to the number of poplars. So far, we have located and marked 28,560 poplar trees with geographic tags.
Appeal to 'Save Chinar'
Dr. Syed Tariq, a scientist at the Forest Research Institute, mentioned that forest regions have stepped up to protect the Chinar. He said, "We have collected their information, noted their physical characteristics, and ensured their security with QR scans. By scanning the QR code, you can learn all about the Chinar tree. We have also initiated a 'Save Chinar' appeal. This is a highly encouraging move as we will compile a database of all Chinars and aim to make it publicly accessible soon."
According to Dr. Syed Tariq, a scientist, Jammu and Kashmir will have between 30,000 and 35,000 Chinar trees. Additionally, new saplings are being planted, and metal plating is being installed on 10,000 poplar trees.
Mohammad Yasin Reshi, the contractor for the Chinar geo-tagging project, stated that they have received outstanding technical support from the division. He characterized it as an extremely beneficial project. The Chinar geo-tagging initiative is being launched for the first time in Kashmir.
