SGPC Opposes 'Emergency' Film, Demands Ban in Punjab
There is a call to prohibit Kangana Ranaut's movie 'Emergency' in Punjab. Concurrently, a significant police presence has been stationed outside PVR Suraj Chanda Tara Cinema in Amritsar, Punjab by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP in opposition to the film.
The movie, set to debut on January 17, has faced significant opposition from the SGPC, which has called for it to be banned in Punjab.
Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, the chairman of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), penned a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, alleging that the film is politically driven and intended to malign the Sikh community.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary of the Punjab Government, it was clearly mentioned that the film 'Emergency' would be banned from screening in Punjab due to its politically motivated content aimed at defaming Sikhs.
In a video posted on the committee's X, SGPC chief Dhami stated that he has submitted a demand letter to the Amritsar deputy commissioner, urging him to halt the release of the film that misrepresents Sikh characters.
According to the SGPC, the movie misrepresents Sikh figures, particularly Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. The government frequently manipulates Sikh emotions. This is why we previously filed a complaint with the government to prevent the film's release.
The SGPC has sent a letter to the DC requesting the halt of the film's release in Punjab. A female member of the SGPC mentioned that after the trailer was unveiled, numerous individuals expressed concerns that the historical representation was inaccurate and could offend the Sikh community.
