Renowned Malayalam Writer MT Vasudevan Nair Dies at 91
Renowned Malayalam writer and film director M T Vasudevan died at the age of 91. He breathed his last at Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode on Wednesday. According to reports, he was admitted to the hospital after suffering a heart attack. MT's works consist of novels, short stories, screenplays, children's literature, travel writing and essays.
Significant contribution to cinema
MT's contributions are more than literature. He made an impact on Malayalam cinema, as he has over 50 films. The first screenplay written by him, was for the film Murappennu (1965), this marked his presence in the cinematic world. He, then directed Nirmalyam (1973), film was considered classic in Indian cinema.
Priyanka Gandhi expresses grief
Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra condoled the death of MT Vasudevan Nair. She wrote on X, "With the passing away of M.T. Vasudevan Nair, we bid adieu to a genius who transformed literature and cinema into powerful mediums of cultural expression. His narratives captured the depth of human emotions and the essence of Kerala's heritage.
National Award winner Vasudevan Nair
MT wrote iconic Nirmalayam, the classic Malayalam cinema and directed six films. His contribution to screenwriting was unparalleled, for which he received 4 National Awards and 11 Kerala State Awards. He wrote scripts for many popular films including 'Nirmalyam', 'Perunthachan', 'Randamuzham' and 'Amrutam Gamaya'. Apart from this, he has received many awards from all over the country, including Jnanpith in 1996 and Padma Bhushan in 2005.
Kerala-born Vasudevan Nair
M. T. Vasudevan Nair was born on July 15, 1933 in Cuddalore village in Palakkad district of Kerala. He has made significant contributions to literature, cinema and journalism. M.T. Vasudevan Nair was honoured with the Jnanpith Award and four National Film Awards for his contribution to literature and cinema. In his compositions, the deep influence of his village and the river Bharatpuzha is seen.
