Farmers Plan March to Delhi Today, Police on Alert
The farmers on a hunger strike at the Shambhu border are planning to march to Delhi at 12 noon today. They have prepared to leave for Delhi. These farmers, who have been protesting since February 13, now plan to walk to Delhi, leaving their tractor-trolleys behind.
The condition of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for more than two weeks, is worsening. On Friday, the Supreme Court instructed Dallewal to seek medical help. Additionally, he urged farmers to embrace Gandhian methods of protest.
Rakesh Tikait, a prominent figure in agriculture, also had a meeting with Jagjit Singh Dallewal. Following the meeting, Tikait expressed that the government needs to foster an environment conducive to dialogue.
He mentioned, 'We will now develop a new plan to travel to Delhi. At present, the conditions are not favorable for a trip to Delhi, and significant preparations will be necessary.'
In the meantime, a panel of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjwal Bhuyan instructed the Punjab and central governments that Dallewal's life held greater value than the movement.
Ensuring their health does not decline should be a top priority. Justice Surya Kant suggested halting the protest or relocating it. He said, "Allow the committee to operate. If the issue remains unresolved, the protest can be restarted." Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh committed to holding talks with the farmers.
Dallewal On Hunger Strike Since Nov 26
Dallewal has been on a hunger strike since November 26 at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana to pressure the Center into accepting the farmers' demands, including a legal guarantee for MSP of crops.
Since February 13, farmers associated with Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been stationed at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders between Punjab and Haryana after security forces halted their march to Delhi.
